Banff National Park: A Trip to Lake Louise in December
As a Canadian gal, I finally made my way to visit Banff National Park. It is one of the most breathtaking places I have ever visited to date. I got to visit my uncle Paul who lives in Calgary, and was able to finally experience the Canadian Rockies.

In this blog post, we embark on a journey to explore the enchantment of Lake Louise, delving into its rich history, the array of outdoor activities it offers, and the timeless allure that makes it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts.
The turquoise waters
Lake Louise owes its striking turquoise hue to the glacial silt that flows into its waters. Fed by the meltwater from the Victoria Glacier, the lake’s unique coloration creates a visual spectacle that defies description. The pristine waters reflect the surrounding peaks, including Mount Victoria and the iconic Fairview Mountain, forming a picturesque panorama that leaves a lasting imprint on every visitor.
- Hiking Trails: Explore the network of hiking trails that surround Lake Louise, catering to both beginners and experienced hikers. The Plain of Six Glaciers and the Lake Agnes Tea House trails offer breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountains, glaciers, and the lake itself.
- Canoeing: Take to the tranquil waters of Lake Louise in a canoe, soaking in the beauty of the glacier-fed lake. Canoe rentals are available during the summer months, providing a unique perspective of the emerald waters against the backdrop of towering peaks.
- Winter Sports: Embrace the winter wonderland with activities such as ice skating on the frozen lake, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The Lake Louise Ski Resort offers world-class slopes for skiing and snowboarding, attracting winter sports enthusiasts from around the globe.

The Iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise:
Overlooking the lake’s turquoise waters and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is an iconic landmark that adds a touch of luxury to the alpine setting. Originally built in the early 20th century, the chateau offers world-class accommodations, dining experiences, and a spa, allowing visitors to indulge in refined comfort while surrounded by the breathtaking wilderness.

Where to Take Photos
Lake Louise is full of tourists, so it is best to go early and snap a shot right in front of the lake. I would also suggest heading down the trails to get pictures near the forest. Make sure to use the bathroom one you enter because there is no where else to go.
- Lake Louise Shoreline:
- The iconic turquoise waters of Lake Louise with the majestic Victoria Glacier in the background create a classic and stunning shot. Capture the lake from various angles along the shoreline to showcase its crystal-clear waters and the surrounding mountainous landscape.
- Fairview Lookout:
- Hike up to the Fairview Lookout for a panoramic view of Lake Louise. This elevated vantage point offers a unique perspective of the lake, with the Chateau Lake Louise visible in the frame. The elevated position provides a sweeping view of the glacier, lake, and surrounding forests.
- Moraine Lake Road:
- While technically not Lake Louise, Moraine Lake is nearby and equally picturesque. Along the road to Moraine Lake, there are several pullouts and viewpoints that offer fantastic views of the valley, the Ten Peaks, and the winding road itself. The switchbacks make for interesting compositions.
- Canoeing on Lake Louise:
- Rent a canoe and paddle out onto the turquoise waters of Lake Louise. This allows you to capture unique perspectives of the lake, with the surrounding mountains reflected in the calm waters. The vibrant colors and serene atmosphere make for some of the most captivating photos.
- Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House Trail:
- Hike the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House Trail for breathtaking views of Lake Louise and the surrounding glaciers. The trail takes you to higher elevations, offering opportunities for capturing the lake from above. Additionally, you can photograph the impressive glaciers and rugged mountain landscapes along the way.
Remember to check for any restrictions or regulations regarding photography in the area, and always prioritize the preservation of the natural environment. Each season brings a different charm to Lake Louise, so consider the time of year and weather conditions when planning your photography adventure.

The snow-capped mountains provide a stunning backdrop for hiking, canoeing, and leisurely strolls along the lakeshore. Wildflowers carpet the surrounding meadows, adding bursts of color to the alpine scenery.
- Autumn Radiance: As autumn arrives, the larch trees surrounding the lake turn a brilliant golden hue, creating a mesmerizing contrast against the azure waters. The crisp mountain air and the sound of leaves crunching beneath your feet make fall a particularly magical time to visit.
- Winter Wonderland: In winter, Lake Louise becomes a snowy paradise. The lake freezes, creating a serene expanse for ice skating and providing a unique perspective of the surrounding peaks. The nearby Lake Louise Ski Resort offers world-class skiing and snowboarding, making it a winter sports enthusiast’s dream.
